I'm thinking a reason to use the Source version is optimization, it may work better with FRAPS. If I remember correctly, you don't have it so you're out of luck unless someone gets it for you.

resources will disappear after 5 minutes if a player is in the same chunk. That's one solution if you don't mind waiting. I guess it would be easier to wait if all your machinery was under you instead of the chunk right next to you.

What I think is going on here is that the redstone keeps the lava from touching the ground so it contacts the second layer but not the third.
