I recommend that all new players learn to keep score using what is called "algebraic" notation.
The eight vertical columns of squares are called "files". The eight horizontal rows of squares are called "ranks". A straight line of squares of the same color, touching corner to corner, is called a "diagonal".
King = K, Queen = Q, Rook = R, Bishop = B, Knight = N, Pawn = file + rank,
Castling King-side = 0-0, Castling Queen-side = 0-0-0, ("x" is Capture)
