@Bobharris99 I learned it as , "O Come thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here". I think perhaps like the telling of old stories over many generations, the words change and evolve through time.

@1990animegirl1 Lucky you! How wonderful! This is far and away my favorite Christmas carol. The first time I heard it as a child my mum says I just sobbed, silly, but it still affects me so.
