From September 4, 1964: the closing segment to the last nighttime version of the original Price is RIght. Johnny Gilbert announces the final tally, Bill Cullen thanks everyone, and demonstrates impressive psychic powers by stating the show will return to nighttime television in about nine or ten years. He was only off by one year. It isn't quite Dan Rowan predicting that Ronald Reagan would be President in 1988, but still...

The original Price is Right started on NBC on daytime on Nov. 26, 1956. It proved so popular that the network ordered up a nighttime version which debuted on Sept. 23, 1957. The show switched to ABC in the fall of 1963 after NBC cancelled the nighttime edition. The daytime Price would run for another year before going off the air in September of 1965.

In the ABC version, Goodson-Todman did the old "throw in a celebrity and hope it boosts ratings" trick (to quote one Rocket J. Squirrel, that trick NEVER works). Here Pat Carroll joined three civilian contestants, playing for members of the audience. As you can see, Pat didn't so well.




As I mentioned in the Eye Guess clip, I don't remember much of the original Price. It was one of my brother's favorite shows,though. (less info)
