Troy Davis is an innocent man on Georgia's death row. In 1991, Mr. Davis was convicted of the 1989 shooting death of an off-duty police officer (Mark Allen MacPhail). However, the conviction was based on highly unreliable evidence - 9 eyewitnesses and snitches. Since then, 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted.
On March 17, 2008, after 17 years of struggling to get his compelling evidence of innocence heard, a slight majority of the Georgia Supreme Court refused to order an evidentiary hearing on the new evidence. The majority was content to leave the verdict stand despite persistent allegations that his conviction was based on perjured testimony.
Mr. Davis' case is now pending with the United States Supreme Court.
