Free Government Cheese... or "Pasteurized Process American Cheese for Use in Domestic Programs" was cheese that was provided to welfare and food stamp recipients in the United States through the 1980's, and commonly associated with Reaganomics, and was commonly used in military chow halls and commissaries since WWII. These came in large blocks of presliced cheese, generally in one pound boxes that featured very generic markings indicating the contents with no branding. The cheese was considered very good quality as it had to meet Grade A standards for milk and cheese content.
The cheese line to receive government cheese was generally over an hour long in wait, and goverment cheese is considered by many to be a superior type of cheese. Although, no one would ever admit to eating this cheese.
The cheese was bought and stored by the government's Commodity Credit Corporation. Direct distribution of dairy products began in 1982 under the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program of the Food and Nutrition Service. According to the government, it "slices and melts well."
In the United States the term is also used, often derisively, to describe monetary government assistance given to those who are in need of financial help; a person receiving such aid is said to "live on Government Cheese."
