About Me:

I'm a musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Uppsala, Sweden (now residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA) that thinks self-distance is the key to world peace.....

I like all kinds of music, and I play all kinds of music too. But I have a particular interest in Swedish folk music and the musical instruments (especially the older ones) associated with that culture. Lately I've been immersing myself in the art of composing for film.

Well, I think it's time to introduce the instruments I play (sorted by region or country):

SWEDEN:
Swedish bagpipes
Octave mandolin
Bone flute (replica of a Swedish dark-ages flute)
Groddalira (hurdy-gurdy model from Gotland)
Härjedalspipa (herding flute)
Skalmeja (shawm)
Spilåpipa (herding flute)
Jews harp
Kohorn (cowhorn)
Ocarina
Bowed harp (stråkharpa/tagelharpa)
Harmonica
Näverlur (wooden lur)

AFRICA:
Thumb piano

RUSSIA:
Balalaika (unfortunately I don't own one, but I have played one at a couple of concerts in Sweden)

USA:
Native American Flute
Anasazi Flute
Cajun Accordion

MIDDLE EAST:
Baglama saz (Turkey)
Cumbus (Turkey)

CHINA:
Erhu
Hulusi

AUSTRALIA:
Didgeridoo

IRELAND:
Tin whistle
Low whistle

HAWAII:
Ukulele

NORWAY:
Sälgflöjt (Willow flute. Type of overtone flute with only one finger hole. Also found in Sweden.)

OTHER INSTRUMENTS I PLAY:
Guitars (6 and 12 string, nylon string and electric, all usually with weird tunings)
Melodica
Piano
Bass
Recorder
Mandolin
Tambourine

Trust me folks, after a couple of instruments it gets easier and easier to translate between them. I mostly use them for expressing my own compositions, moods or as a certain type of sound.

SPECS FOR MY HOME STUDIO:
Dual AMD Opterton 280 dual core 2,4GHz and 6 Gb RAM (Dual monitors)
Cubase 4
HALion 3.1
Sound Forge 8 Bundle

AlphaTrack (control surface)
Nanokorg (MIDI controller)
API 500-6b Lunchbox (with Great River MP500-NV)

KRK RP8 Rokit
KRK RP5 Rokit (only 1 for mono listening)
M-Audio Oxygen61

Shure SM57

Books:
Oh my! Sooooooo many! Well, here are a couple that have meant a lot to me. GÖRAN GRIP: Allting finns (Everything exists). Unfortunately never translated to another laungage. Which is very sad because it's the best book I've ever come across. CARLOS CASTANEDA: Journey to Ixtlan and Tales of Power. The whole series of books are cool. But these two stand superior to the rest of them. STELLAN SJÖDEN: Hjärnan, Männikan och Kulturen (The Brain, the Man and the Culture) Not translated.

Hi Fred , i wonder if you could let me know where i can get the music from for your Slangpolskas, I listen to it quite a lot on youtube and would like to learn how to play it. I have an Octave mandola , also what tuning is your mandola in . Many thanks. Steve.

Hey Fredrik!

Hope all is well with you, looking forward to your next video.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble, do you think you could aid a 16-year-old folk musician on his quest of building a talharpa? Do you have any plans for building one or at least a material list?

Tack så mycket,
Jaska
