The French cannot accept that they were never the most powerful empire in the world, I spoke to a French person the other day and she was absolutely adamant that France was the worlds dominant superpower before America, I tried telling her that the British controlled India, Australia and most of Africa while the French were stuck with Vietnam, a small part of Northern Africa and a tiny insignificant portion of South America.
