Sylvia Marie Likens, born January 3 1949, and her younger sister Jenny were left in the care of a single woman of seven named Gertrude Baniszewski. After a three-month stay at her house, Sylvia was found dead and battered on a matress. She had been beaten, brutalized, starved and tortured in a period of two weeks. She had been locked in a basement where Gertrude, her children and neighborhood kids tormented her. Soon her body gave up and she died in October 26, 1965. This crime remains one of the most brutal child abuse crimes of the country.
This channel was made in memory of the beautiful young girl who died too soon, of a case that broke the hearts of many and made a change in child abuse laws and awareness. She would never be forgotten.
