I don't think it matters how you get there. Theory is certainly one way. jluvsmetal, would you please post a link to where Santana said he hasn't used theory?
@virgilus999 I believe the song is in G major, not the relative minor of Bm. The song is unusual in that it moves around the circle of fifths to reach the key at the end of the first eight bars. That said, I can see an argument for Bm.
