About Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Program
Among other provisions, the United States congressional enactment of the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act of 1988 (CFIVSA, Public Law 100-424; 46 U.S.C.A. § 4501), instructed the Secretary to prescribe regulations which require that each commercial fishing industry vessel to which the law applies be equipped with so stated minimal safety and survival equipment, as well as to conduct a "Fishing Industry Vessel Inspection Study."
The United States Coast Guard intended to use the technical information, analysis, and recommendations in the report to Congress and in its decision making concerning specific programs and regulations to improve fishing vessel safety.
