Bringing together innovative thinkers at the frontiers of active citizenship in Amsterdam and New York.
The Pioneers Sessions will celebrate the common values of creativity, diversity and entrepreneurship in Amsterdam and New York City and the two cities' shared history of urban
The sessions bring together a group of selected Pioneers-today's cutting edge thinkers and entrepreneurs in diverse professional fields-for a transatlantic dialogue into the frontiers of civic engagement and social entrepreneurship in Amsterdam and New York City. Participants are young professionals drawn from a broad range of fields including academia, the arts, business, health, education, government, grassroots activism, media and technology. Pioneers gain knowledge and inspiration from exploring how innovative thinkers from different cities and disciplines are meeting the challenges of urban, social and civic engagement.
The Pioneers participate in two meetings with recognized experts in Amsterdam (April 1-3, 2009) and New York City (November 19-20, 2009). The sessions explore several key questions, rooted in the unique histories of both cities.
What are the specific qualities of urban life in Amsterdam and New York City that create the conditions in which today's Pioneers thrive?
How do aspects of history, politics, social traditions, cultural heritage, diversity and demography in Amsterdam and New York City provide both the tensions and inspirations for civic engagement in multicultural cities?
In which ways do global forces-technological change, economic recession, migration patterns, religious expression, and increasing diversity-present challenges and opportunities that today's Pioneers can act upon at the local level?
The Pioneers Sessions is a mix of workshops, seminars, site visits and informal, off-the-record conversation. Following each conference, there is a public celebration in both cities to engage a wider and diverse audience of all ages in thinking about the frontiers of active citizenship.
Beyond the sessions in Amsterdam and New York City, Pioneers continue their dialogue through a virtual network and participate in drafting a manifesto, a vision statement for their two cities, based upon insights drawn from their experiences during the sessions. This approach guarantees a wider and sustained impact of the meetings beyond the individual participants.

I Have a Dream... 13 June 2008, Felix Meritis
Islam is part of Europe and the European cultural heritage, even though it is most widespread in other parts of the world. There are many Europeans today who would describe their identity with good reason as both European and Muslim. Is a new form of European Islam developing or a form of Islamic Europe?
There is also the picture of a Muslim community and a European Community that are retreating behind a rigid version of religion, ideology or uncertainty. How accurate is that picture? And how does it relate to the many cooperation initiatives that neighbourhoods, schools, the cultural sector and mosques and churches are developing? What is the relation of individuals and groups towards a democratic state? Are Europe and the US developing different attitudes towards Islam and Muslims? What is the added value of Islam for Europe? Does Islam represent a strengthening or a weakening of the public space? And what questions would the speakers themselves like to raise about the future of Islam in Europe?
With Nilüfer Göle (Professor of Sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, Paris), Tariq Ramadan (Visiting Professor at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam) and Paul Scheffer (Professor Urban Geographies of Place and Social Interactions, University of Amsterdam). Moderator: Markha Valenta (Researcher VU University, Amsterdam)

23rd Globalisation Lecture: The New Asian Hemisphere - 3 Nov
23rd Globalisation Lecture with Kishore Mahbubani and Frans Timmermans, European Affairs Minister (The Netherlands)
For centuries the Asians (Chinese, Indians, Muslims and others) have stood on the sidelines of world history. Now they are ready to demand their share of world power. The East has modernised at a rapid pace, and has the fastest growing economies and the biggest financial reserves in the world. Much is changing in the social and cultural arena as well. But how do Europe and the US react to Asia's turbulent emergence? According to the intellectual Kishore Mahbubani from Singapore, the only group in the West to anticipate the changes in the East is the business world. Western governments, on the other hand, are hiding their heads in the sand and refuse to accept that the shift of economic power will also mean a shift of political and cultural power.
