Turks are extremely nationalistic. They believe being a soldier is an honor and that soldiers do not die when shot but die when forgotten.

Atatürk means "Father of the Turks". This honorific last name was given to him in 1934 by the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

- It is a crime in Turkey:
. to insult Ataturk
. to insult Turkishness
. to insult Turkish flag (stepping on it, burning it, etc)

There are some Turks who do not like Ataturk since Ataturk believed in separation of state and religion. Turks who do not like him are the ones who want modern Turkey to be like Iran (basically punishing people by chopping arm, legs off for stealing, beheading for not believing in God, executing people for being gay, executing people in public, treating women worse than crap, seeing them as second class citizens, giving them no rights, allowing a man to be married to infinite # of women, etc, etc. This is not really what Islam says but that is what happens when you rule your entire country based on the way a couple of people personally interpret religion).

Regardless, these nutjobs are not allowed to insult Ataturk publicly. By not allowing them to do this, we make sure they do not get the oppurtunity to form groups. Basically, yes, we're oppressing them.

- It is a crime to insult the flag and Turkishness because:

Turkey has a lot of ethnic groups. Nearly all ethnic groups consider themselves Turks. However, one ethnic group (Kurds) refuse to be an ethnic group just because their number is high and want to get land from our country to form their own country (aka "kurdistan" dream). Now, that is clearly unacceptable so by not allowing them to insult the flag and Turkishness, we prevent them from forming groups, as well.

As I mentioned, Turks are very proud of their race and take great pride in it. Anyone who insults it will not be tolerated. The judicial system would never execute you or anything (brief jail time at most) but some ultra-nationalistic Turk (aka greywolves) might kill you:

n addition, to Turks, a flag is not just a piece of cloth. When we look at our flag, we see the thousands of Turks that had to die for us to have a flag to wave today. It stands for the blood shed for it. Ataturk has a saying: "What makes a flag a flag is the blood on it. Soil, if there is one to die for it, becomes a homeland." so yes, we have a flag fetish and love our flag dearly.

National belief: "Every Turk is born a soldier."

- National saying: "Happy is the one who says, "I'm a Turk!" - Ataturk (you see this written at the end of the video: NE MUTLU TURK'UM DIYENE!"

- National motto: "Peace at home; peace in the world." - Ataturk

- The name of Turkey, ''Türkiye'' in the Turkish language, can be divided into two words: "Türk" means "strong" in Old Turkic and the abstract suffix -iye (derived from Arabic) which means "owner" or "related to".
