It's not just oval tracks that can be deadly. Drivers have died on road/street courses, as well.

Clearly Montoya's fault. He lost control of his car all by himself, drifted up into Stewart causing him to lose control of his car. When you race that hard, stuff like that is gonna happen! Just another example that super-speedway racing is a lot harder than it looks.

Adding road/street races to try to kill CART was a huge mistake. The IRL should have stayed an exclusively oval track series. Eventually, CART would have ended up as an exclusively road/street course series and everyone would have been better off.

The "split" in Indycar racing didn't occur in 1996, it occurred in 1979 when the CART was created to take Indycar racing away from the United States Auto Club.
