Elizabeth Hays novel Late Nights on Air (McClelland and Stewart 2008) won the Scotiabank Giller Prize and makes her an excellent guest for the Fanshawe College Letters and Arts Society since the College hosts its own radio station and Broadcasting Programs. Her other works include A Student of Weather (McClelland and Stewart 2001), which was a finalist for the Giller Prize and Ottawa Book Award; Garbo Laughs (McClelland and Stewart 2004), which won the Ottawa Book Award and was a finalist for the Governor Generals Award; and Small Change (stories, McClelland and Stewart 2000). In 2002, she received the prestigious Marian Engel Award. Elizabeth Hay lives in Ottawa, and we are thrilled to have her visit Fanshawe College.

Presented by a 3rd year Political Science Student at Western who decided that political conflict could not be learned simply by sitting in a classroom. As a result of this revelation, she travelled to Gaza to unpack the political, economic and social turmoil associated with the history of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. She will speak directly to the idea of pragmatic sociology and her experience in Gaza.

"Changing Attitudes towards Homosexuality: The Power of Social Structures"
Dr. Fetner explores the history of contentious politics around lesbian and gay rights in the United States and examines the dynamics of opposing movements. She also examines the role of social forces in changing attitudes toward homosexuality and the politics of challenging power structures like gender norms, class hierarchies and systems of authority in academics through fashion, voice, small actions and other ways of being.
