This is the Food Factor robot game at the 2011 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Southern California Championship, held December 3 at Legoland. As always, the event was extremely well organized and very fun for all the teams. "Showcase and Celebration!"
At table 1 is our FLL team Westside, with six dedicated chassis run by our Core Module called Westy. All 8 kids participate, tagging in and out from offstage.
This run scored 219 points, out of 311 possible with these chassis. Westy lost 7 points by not bringing the West germ basket to Base (to add 9th virus for Sink delivery), and lost the remaining 85 points when our robot got stuck on the dining table in the final trip. South Monster was about to return the baby fish, deliver 12 groceries, spin the timer and thermometer, and touch the East wall.
Overall our team was happy with this run, after solving a problem with light sensor readings in the first 2 rounds. In team meetings, our best practice run so far was 2 minutes 15 seconds, scoring 302 points - close to our maximum of 311.
This year our robot design goals were: full team participation, solve all the missions, and improve our Core Module concept from last year. A successful and fun season!

FLL team Westside wanted a fun robotics project for summer 2011. In May, the kids chose a old Robot Game from 2008 called Climate Connections. It seemed interesting and challenging!
The team set a goal of accomplishing all the missions, using an improved version of their Core Module concept from the 2010 Body Forward season. This summer project would also help the 3 newer team members learn the overall process of setting goals, choosing a strategy, planning missions, and solving them creatively - as a group!
After meeting twice a week during the summer, the kids held their "CC400" event on July 31, 2011. It was a fun and successful day, with great teamwork on display.
Their reward was to open the new Food Factor field kit, which had just arrived. But that's another story... actually that's another video!

Team Westside opened the 2011 FIRST LEGO League robot game kit on July 31, 2011. Opening the kit is an exciting highlight of the FLL season. Many teams prefer to sort the LEGO parts first by type or color, then draw from the sorted bins to build the field pieces. The kids built the field pieces in about 2 hours.
This event followed a fun summer project called CC400, where the team worked together to solve all the missions in an old FLL robot game called Climate Connections.

These are early test runs of the 2010 Body Forward Robot Game, by FLL team Westside. At the beginning of the season, the team decided to try and earn all 400 points. They chose a method of one Core Module (NXT brick, motors, sensors) to drive various dedicated chassis. The kids were inspired by the "robot within a robot" concept seen last year at tournaments and here on YouTube; their version can be seen in Trip 5.
