I guess Brava has limited exposure to operatic singers to say that this performance is better than Callas. That is one of the most ridiculous comments I've heard yet! This is a fine opera, but NOT the best. Whoever wrote that must not be very familiar with the whole body of opera. This opera established Mascagni as the probable successor to Verdi, which he wasn't. Angela Gheorghiu is perhaps the best of the sopranos today. She was wonderful in her recording of Carmen with her husband,, Roberto Alegna,, who was also very fine as Don Jose.. The BEST, however, is that person without peer, Maria Callas. She does have a beautiful and powerful voice..no doubt..
