Erbgrinder is the newest of Ben Ashdown's many pseudonyms. Previously working with Jason Boardman releasing under the names Truant, Michael Ralph, Tribadelics andThe Superconductors, Ben's latest fun project is a solo one, but draws on the talents of a local MC and another popular local vocalist. Ben is somewhat cagey about their identities but explains that they're currently touring with some major artists. "It will all be sorted out by the time the album launches at the Manchester In the City festival next year. I know they'll want to have a break after touring, so I don't want to start the buzz too early, I want them at their best!" Enthuses Ben.
Ben plays me some of the work in progress and there's currently more of an electronic element to Ben's new tracks than there used to be.
"I made a conscious decision to try not to make a record every time I start a track if you see what I mean. I feel I really used to try and force it - like I had the A&R guy breathing down my neck all the time...its crippling in the end and negates any creativity. This time around I don't think about selling the music, I just make it and have a great time doing so...its someone else's job to try and sell it for me, although I had to convince them first!"
