There was a time when people considered the cello a fine orchestral instrument and thought it sounded too anemic and coarse for serious solo material, but excellent musicians who fought for it and got the music out to the audience changed that.

I like to think the composer would appreciated the rawness of Maisky's playing. He always gave performers liberty with his music.
