I wear the mask because I oppose Scientology.
The problem with politics is that it attracts politicians. Politicians are career-minded individuals. It's not easy to get elected, and if you're unpopular, you're out of a job. That means that people in positions of power will tend to do popular things to keep their jobs and hesitate to do unpopular things that need doing to avoid getting fired. People getting contributions from tobacco companies won't stand up and say they're criminals, because they'd lose that contribution. Ultimately they're puppets, and their career is the string.
"Religion is like asking a blind man what god looks like."
Some believers say that gods are unknowable, or so superior to us that we cannot even conceive of them. If that's true, how come people claim to know and understand what god is, what he/she/it wants, what he/she/it likes and dislikes? If we can't conceive of gods, what exactly are believers believing in?

The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker got me through many of my university classes with the confidence to answer just about every question the teachers asked.God Wants You Dead, by Sean Hastings and Paul Rosenberg is also a very interesting read that goes into detail concerning the problems of ideologies. Don't let the title fool you, it's not just about religion. They picked the title precisely to get the reaction you're likely to have had reading it just now.On a lighter note, the Discworld series is a personal favorite of mine. Oh, and Jennifer Government by Max Barry. Read it, no questions asked. Absolutely worth it.
