██ THE EAST SEA (東海), located EAST of the Eurasian continent, is a sea area surrounded by the Korean peninsula, Russia, and the Japanese islands. FOR 2,000 YEARS the name of this body of water has been the EAST SEA .

Korea's OLDEST HISTORY BOOK, The History of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk Sagi 三國史記, published in 1154 AD), records that the name East Sea had been in use SINCE 37 BC. The same name was inscribed on a huge stone stele put up in AD 414 in memory of King Gwanggaeto of the Goguryeo(37 BC - 668 AD), and the monument still stands in northeast China.

Thus, the name EAST SEA EVEN PREDATES the national name JAPAN (日本), which was first used in the 8th century, BY about 700 YEARS.

██ THE STANDARD PRACTICE IS TO USE NAMES THAT ARE POLITICALLY NEUTRAL AND HISTORICALLY CONSISTENT. Sea of Japan is NEITHER:

The ADRIATIC SEA is not called "Sea of Italy" or "Sea of Croatia" or "Sea of Albania" -- although Italy is bigger than all the other surrounding nations, the name of the sea is neutral.

The BALTIC SEA is not called "Sea of Sweden" or "Sea of Finland" -- although Sweden is bigger than all the other surrounding nations.

The BLACK SEA is not called "Sea of Turkey" or "Sea of Russia" or "Sea of Ukraine" -- although Turkey has the longest shoreline.

The RED SEA is not called "Sea of Saudi Arabia" or "Sea of Egypt" or "Sea of Sudan" -- although Saudi Arabia has the longest shoreline.

The PERSIAN GULF is not called "Sea of Iran" or "Sea of Saudi Arabia" or "Sea of UAE" -- although Iran has the longest shoreline.

██ MOST SEAS DO NOT USE A PARTICULAR NATION'S NAME:

The NORTH SEA is not called "Sea of Britain" -- although without Great Britain it would simply be the Atlantic Ocean.

★ Note the difference between UK and Japan: the British never tried to name it the Sea of Britain although it would actually be consistent with internationally accepted practice. The same goes for the followings:

The ADRIATIC SEA is not called "Sea of Italy" -- although without Italy it would be the Mediterranean Sea.

The BALTIC SEA is not called "Sea of Sweden" -- although without Sweden it would be the Arctic Ocean.

The BLACK SEA is not called "Sea of Turkey" -- although without Turkey it would also be the Mediterranean.

The RED SEA and the PERSIAN GULF are not called "Sea of Saudi Arabia" -- although without Saudi Arabia they would be the Indian Ocean.

██ IF A NATION'S NAME IS USED, THE GENERAL CONVENTION IS ACTUALLY TO USE THE NATION OR AREA'S NAME LOCATED IN THE WEST of the particular sea:

The YELLOW SEA in the EAST of China is indicated as it is because it is the sea the Yellow River (of China) flowing into.

The Sea in the EAST of Okhotsk City in Russia is called the SEA OF OKHOTSK.

The sea in the west of Okinawa and EAST of China is called the EAST CHINA SEA.

The sea in the west of the Philippines and southEAST of China is called the SOUTH CHINA SEA.

The sea in the EAST of the Philippines is called the PHILIPPINE SEA.

The sea in the EAST of Timor is called the SEA OF TIMOR.

The sea in the EAST of Tasmania located in the Southern Australia (and between Australia and New Zealand) is called the TASMANIAN SEA.

The sea in the EAST of the Arabian peninsula is the ARABIAN SEA.

The sea in the EAST of Mexico is called the MEXICO BAY. (The name Mexico is politically neutral as it is used widely in the US and the Philippines)

The sea in the EAST of the Labrador peninsula of Canada is the SEA OF LABRADOR.

The sea in the EAST of Mozambique of Africa is called the SEA OF MOZAMBIQUE.

The sea in the EAST of Andaman is called the SEA OF ANDAMAN.

██ SEA OF JAPAN IS THE ONLY EXCEPTION WHERE NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES DO NOT AGREE UPON SUCH EXCLUSIVE AND COLONIALIST NAME.

In 1977, the third UN CONFERENCE ON THE STANDARDIZATION OF GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES (UNCSGN) recommended:

"when countries sharing a given geographical feature do not agree on a common name, it should be a general rule of cartography that the name used by each of the countries concerned will be accepted. A POLICY OF ACCEPTING ONLY ONE or some of such names WHILE EXCLUDING THE REST would be INCONSISTENT as well as INEXPEDIENT in practice."

██ THEREFORE, THE MORE NEUTRAL NAME EAST SEA IS not only PROPER AND CORRECT, but also THE MORE POSTCOLONIAL SOLUTION compared to the hegemonic and colonial Sea of Japan.

★★★★ About the background ★★★★ It is an English translation of an early 18th century French map, CARTE DES INDES ET DE LA CHINE, by one of the most esteemed French geographers and cartographers during the Age of Enlightenment, Guillaume Delisle (1675 - 1726, a member of the French Royal Academy of Science--associé of the Académie des Sciences--and the First Royal Geographer) published in 1705. In the original French map, it is written: "MER ORIENTALE (East Sea) ou MER DE COREE (Sea of Korea)".
