I was a chemist for 25 years before entering the field of dentistry. I studied chemistry at Brown University, the University of Illinois, and the California Institute of Technology, and taught as a professor at the University of California, Irvine. The nature of dental materials has always been a major interest of mine due to this background. When I completed dental school at Loma Linda University I joined the faculty full-time and did preclinical and clinical teaching for eight years. I conducted the largest study of amalgam "toxicity" ever carried out. Soon after starting my faculty position dentists started coming to me for help with the California Clinical Examination and the California Restorative "bench" Examination. This started a series of courses offered at Loma Linda, and off campus, that has extended into a seventeen-year career helping over 3500 dentists, mostly foreign-trained originally. The DSI Point-of-View camera was developed specifically to help teach more effectively in the extensive hands-on courses that I teach - and this system of teaching is starting to find its way into the university setting.
