I was in Paris when the Solidarity marchers walked through Paris demonstrating the border closing of Poland in X-mas of 1980. U2 were in the studio writing a love song New Year's Day. When they saw the uprising, as I did, they changed the song from a love song to this political rocker.

I love it that they take a risk putting out tunes before the album comes out. I remember a similar idea for ZOO T. V. but Zooropa, I think was already in the shops before the tour started in Europe.

The beauty in this song reminds me why I became a fan. I hope to find solace in this new record and the belief that this band is still great. The last two records, ATYCLB and HTDAAB were not my favorites.
