I am 81 yrs of age, a Yorkshireman by birth but a 'Shropshire Lad' by descent - born i Leeds West Riding of Yorkshire.I enlisted into the Welsh Guards in October 1945, and rebadged to The Grenadier Guards in January 1947.
I dis a 'modified KH Pupils' course' withe Lt Col Fred Harris, my Director of Music whilst attached to the Regimental Band for 4 months in 1956. I was appointed Drum Major of the 1st Bn Grenadier Guards in May 1958, and (By Royal Warrant) -
'Drummer to The Royal Household' also.
In Sept 1960, as a result of the beginning of the Reduction of The Armed Forces - our 3rd Bn was disbanded, and as I was the junior Drum Major of the three, I left the Regiment on Redundancy.
I joined the Fire Service - acting as the Senior Drum Major of the West Riding County Fire Service Band in my off duty time.
I retired from the Fire Service on medical grounds in 1985 with the rank of Divisional Officer and a Course Director at The Fire Servic College , Moreton in Marsh, Glos.
I am now disabled with Chronic Rheumatoid Arhritis, but I have created and administer 10 groups on Face Book - the two largest ones being - 'THE FACEBOOK GRENADIERS' and 'VETERANS OF THE HOUSEHOLD DIVISION' - both have over 1,300 members. - keeps me out of mischief! lol
I have two daughters (both married), and I live in quiet retuirement with my wife Barbara in the village of GOMERSAL, West Yorkshire..
