About this user

Married extremely happily for forty years to THE Bonnie Lass. First walked out with her when we were both fourteen (chaperoned, of course). A long on-off romance culminated in me realising she was the best thing that would ever happen to me, so I proposed - yep! on one knee even asked her fathers permission - his answer "Yee'll dae what ye want anyway" - a marvellous man. Had to get permission from The Bank to get married - you had to be 23 - also my in-laws had to be vetted - how times change!
Two grown up kids, both married - eldest, my daughter and her man, have two beautiful daughters, youngest, my son and his wife, have two handsome boys and a beautiful daughter.
Born in The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, in 1947, moved to Ayrshire aged 11. Finished my schooling at Kilmarnock Academy. Much to my parents chagrin and later my own, I did not take up a place at University to study Pure Physics - joined the Bank of Scotland in 1965, worked out of the Kilmarnock for 12 or so years. Received most of my promotions in that Branch until in 1979, was promoted back down to "God's Ain Country" - The Stewartry. Had my first heart-attack some year or so later and subsequently my surgeon and cardiologist retired me at the ripe old age of 33. I was fortunate and the only reason that I am still "the richt side o' the grass" is my wife mainly and my family. That all paled into insignificance when she discovered the "dreaded lump" some three years ago and the subsequent operation, chemotherapy and radio treatments I would not wish on my worst enemy.
Whilst young, I took my first venture into music with the Bass Recorder at school. Then took up skiffle, with a tea chest a brush handle and a bit of string. Got my first guitar not long after (I'm sure my mother got fed up hunting for her brush handle). Moved on to Rock and Roll, first rhythm then lead and finally bass. Finished up playing in pubs with a mate for fun (not a good idea when playing rugby the following day).
At a young age I was introduced to rugby union and played for Kilmarnock Academy then Kilmarnock R.F.C. (usually their lowliest team) also a couple of games for Glasgow Accies.
Took up coaching when my son was 16 or so. He was a different prospect and but for a bad ligament injury - twice - he may well have pulled on the dark blue jersey. Coached Stewartry R.F.C. "Colts", Kirkcudbright Academy and helped out at District and National youth levels. Yep! with a serious heart condition and with the approval of my cardiologist of nearly thirty years who happens to be the Scottish Football Team Doctor - he said I coached rugby to spite him - not true.

CLAIMS TO FAME:

Married THE BONNIE LASS!

Once put a Scotland "B" international out of the game for six months in Club training with a perfectly timed tackle - okay it was a fluke - and some say nothing to be proud of - it gave one of Scotland's greatest full-backs his first "B" cap.

Put the last branch of the bank online, Gairloch, Wester Ross. Officially, it was Benbecula, that's where they had the big party for all the big cheeses with the finest of champagne, wines, and spirits. Never mind a couple of months later, in the middle of winter, we had a better party, with beer, whisky and rum ( me, whisky - the locals rum, mostly - never did get that - they gave some rather tenuous link to fishing) No cheese in sight.

Musically - perhaps bringing Snows Bar in Piccadilly to a silence singing "Big Spender" on top of a bar table. (I was on secondment with the Bank in London at the time.)
