Prepare to witness a new record for the team of coyote hunters from New York State. When running late and battling a setting sun, Jerrod and Eric needed to call in a coyote quickly in order to be able to film the hunt with enough shooting light. It was the perfect circumstances to call in our fastest coyote of all time. Fifty seconds into calling and before the first set of rabbit squeals was even complete- this coyote came tearing in from the thick brush and into the open hardwoods where DWO sat waiting.
While hanging a treestand for deer season, and scouting for sign- we took special note of this location as a potential coyote setup to re-visit later in the winter. It matched a lot of the criteria we look for in a successful stand. The open hardwoods sit adjacent to a very thick orchard above a large brush lot. The slant of the hill, gives the hunters a nice elevated sitting point to easily view the surrounding area. Finally, the property allows us to walk in from the DownWind side and avoid walking through anything that could potentially hold (and thereby spook away) coyotes. The new coyote spot paid off on its first prime-time attempt in record fashion, luckily for Jerrod who had to "Make It Quick."

Spotting a shooting star while pulling into the property, it was as if the stars had aligned, literally, to forecast the action ahead and cap off an already very successful weekend for DownWind Outdoors. Brian and Jerrod took to the field on this calm cool February morning in hopes of the team's third video of the weekend. It is the peak of mating season and the coyotes have proved to be very responsive to vocalizations recently during night and prime-time hours. Hoping to catch it on video, the two began the day at the very first bit of filming light with a pair of interrogation howls. Interrogation, not "invitation" howls. Name it what you please, but call it with a loud and long "siren-like" howl to greet the other coyotes in the area.
That's all it would take this time for DWO to be putting their sights on a pair of coyotes running in from over a quarter mile away in Upstate New York. With an arsenal of sounds to close the distance, the team went with an old reliable- the cottontail distress of the DWO Signature series squealer made by Crack Predator Calls, to lure the larger of the pair within 100 yards.

The only thing better than arriving to your stand to hear an invitation howl from a lonely female coyote, is perhaps seeing one out in the field in front of you. Within a couple minutes of calling, both would soon come true for Eric and Andy who took to the field during the peak of mating season.
As they opened the doors of their truck and prepared their hunting gear and equipment, invitation howls began ringing from the property of woods in which they were headed. This coyote was essentially saying, "I would like company" or "I am ready for a mate." With a sense of distance and location, the DWO team devised their setup to lure in this vocal coyote without detection. Using an interrogation howl to alert the coyote that "a mate is here", and the sounds of rabbit distress to say "and I have food," they were able to call this dog in rather quickly. The team sat and waited before calling futher to allow enough time for the dog to travel into them. Before they could even believe it, the coyote was right out in front of them at 100 yards.

The fall portion of coyote season is not just a great time to take advantage of young, ignorant coyotes, it is also a great time to harvest mature and educated coyotes too. Having not been hunted or pressured for six months, and trying to protect their territory from invading pups, dominant dogs within hearing distance are almost sure to respond to the call of a successful rabbit hunt by investigating the sound on their home turf.
Eric and Pauly took advantage of the fall season benefits and lured in a mature male, striking while the iron was hot. With the start of the New York State archery season on October 1, 2012, small game hunters across the southern zone of the state will be forced to decide if they want to get an early start chasing whitetail or if they'd like to continue pursuing predators when the action is generally abundant. This hunt, ended one of the most action-packed weeks of all time for the DownWind team.
He was a wily ol' dog to say the least. Not really knowing how long he stood at a distance and analyzed the stand, he was finally spotted on the stone wall behind a bush. Once observed, it was clear that the coyote was not interested in a free meal and didn't step foot into the open field. He's heard the bunny blues a time or two before, located only a couple hundred yards behind DWO headquarters. It makes you wonder, how many coyotes are called in and never spotted? Luckily, this one appeared within distance for Pauly Close and it wasn't an issue to harvest this heavy coyote.

The fall season has always been a favorite for many outdoorsmen. Leaves change colors, temperatures cool down, hunting seasons open up, and animals become more active. DownWind Outdoors is learning that this can also be the best time of year to call in coyotes! Old dogs may forget a few DWO tricks and young coyotes are all grown up and expanding outward into new territories of their own. The new pack is un-educated and eager for their next meal as alpha dogs run them off and maintain control of their hunting grounds. And when these young coyotes are working together, it can make for some really entertaining video.
Andy and Paul set out this morning on the first frost of the year- a really cold and calm morning at a very promising property. They were determined to make up for a late season blunder last year that resulted in an outstanding coyote and kill shot, but nothing else on video. With Andy trying out the all new DWO Signature Series rabbit squealer by Crack, and Pauly taking aim with his .243, this season would start off much better then last season ended. Just a minute into calling and it would be Mr. P staring down the barrel at three !!!
