I Cover the Waterfront (1933) is a film directed by James Cruze and starring Ben Lyon, Claudette Colbert, Ernest Torrance, and Hobart Cavanaugh.
I Cover the Waterfront tells the story of a reporter who investigates a dockland smuggling operation. In the process he becomes romantically involved with the daughter of the man he is investigating. The film was based on a book by the same name, written by Max Miller (1899--1967), a beat reporter in San Diego who covered stories on the city's waterfront.
Cast: Ben Lyon as H. Joseph 'Joe' Miller Claudette Colbert as Julie Kirk Ernest Torrence as Eli Kirk (Julie's father) Hobart Cavanaugh as One Punch McCoy Maurice Black as Ortegus (Kirk's First Mate) Purnell Pratt as John Phelps ('Standard editor, Miller's boss) Harry Beresford as Old Chris (salvage man) Wilfred Lucas as Randall (Coast Guard officer)
Ben Lyon (February 6, 1901 -- March 22, 1979) was an American film actor and a 20th Century Fox studio executive.
Claudette Colbert (September 13, 1903 -- July 30, 1996) was a French-born American stage and film actress.
Born in Saint-Mandé, France and raised in New York City, Colbert began her career in Broadway productions during the 1920s, progressing to film with the advent of talking pictures. She established a successful film career with Paramount Pictures and later, as a freelance performer, became one of the highest paid entertainers in American cinema. Colbert was recognized as one of the leading female exponents of screwball comedy; she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her comedic performance in It Happened One Night (1934), and also received Academy Award nominations for her dramatic roles in Private Worlds (1935) and Since You Went Away (1944).
Her film career began to decline in the 1950s, and she made her last film in 1961. Colbert continued to act in theater and, briefly, in television during her later years. After a career of more than 60 years' duration, Colbert retired to her home in Barbados, where she died at the age of 92, following a series of strokes.
Colbert received theatre awards from the Sarah Siddons Society, a lifetime-achievement award at the Kennedy Center Honors, and, in 1999, the American Film Institute placed her at number twelve on their "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Stars" list of the "50 Greatest American Screen Legends."
Ernest Torrence (June 26, 1878 - May 13, 1933) was a Scottish born film character actor who appeared in many Hollywood films, including Mantrap (1926) with Clara Bow, and Fighting Caravans (1931) with Gary Cooper and Lili Damita. A towering (6' 4") figure, Torrence frequently played cold-eyed and imposing villains.
Hobart Cavanaugh (September 22, 1886 -- April 27, 1950) was an American character actor in films and on stage.
Born in Virginia City, Nevada, Cavanaugh made his film debut in San Francisco Nights (1928). Over the next few years he established himself as a supporting actor, and although many of his roles were small and received no film credit, he played more substantial roles in films such as I Cover the Waterfront (1933) and Mary Stevens, M.D. (1933). By the mid-1930s he was appearing in more prestigious films such as A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Captain Blood (1935) and Wife vs. Secretary (1936). He continued playing small, often comical roles until the end of his life. One of his last appearances was in A Letter to Three Wives (1949). By the end of his life he had appeared in more than 180 films.
He died in Woodland Hills, California.
