These were the keepers of knowledge who wrote books by hand, travelled to uncharted territories to minister the word, oversaw political matters and acted as liaisons between nations and individuals.These activities would have left little to no time to commit to a conventional marriage. Modern advances in technology have made these jobs, and all jobs, much easier and less time consuming, affording these "spouses of God" the down time needed to devote to an emotional partnership.
The RCC has gone through many "enlightened" periods that led to great change. Marriage for the representatives of the church may be an enlightenment of the future.
