Here's a li'l description I typed up:
Doctor Who is a charming and suspenseful sci-fi series aimed at children, though it seems entertaining for adults as much as it is for kids. Originally intended as an educational show, Doctor Who revolves around a mysterious alien who travels through time in his machine (disguised as a 50s phone box) and encounters mysterious enemies - most notably the Daleks, weaponed and plungered machines with stalk eyes and no legs. The Daleks soon became a sensation, and is very possibly partly what made Doctor Who such a hit. Doctor Who began in 1963...
The Doctor himself was originally played by William Hartnell, and old British actor who had appeared in minor character roles like Brighton Rock beforehand, as well as the lead character in the first "Carry On" film. Eventually, he stopped playing the Doctor, and was replaced by Patrick Troughton. Of course, the excuse was that the Doctor had to "regenerate" whenever his body died. All he had to do was to change into another one. So along came Troughton (who was also a minor character actor - he had played one of the play actors in Laurence Olivier's 1948 film version of Hamlet). He was a jolly fellow, very friendly and often very energetic for his age.
After a few encounters with the recent Cybermen and less recent Daleks, along came Jon Pertwee (who also played a few parts in the "Carry On" films). Jon Pertwee, the first Doctor in colour, was an extremely energetic man. He was also the first doctor to have an episode where some (or all so far, in this case) of his bodies met together, in "The Three Doctors". After him came the supposedly most popular Doctor, Tom Baker, a middle-aged actor who had also played the chief baddie in a Ray Harryhausen Sinbad film, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. After many encounters with the Daleks (including the introduction of their maker, Davros) and a few with the Cybermen, the Doctor regenerated once more.
Peter Davidson, a notably young Doctor, took over the part in the early 80s. He was a confident Doctor who always was tense and exciting. He was also friendly and sometimes ironically funny. Later on, he was replaced by Colin Baker, a zany Doctor, who introduced the Sontarans, an astronaut-like batch who's heads where as big as the helmets. After Baker came Sylvester McCoy, an even zanier Doctor who liked to roll his Rs. He always was pleasant and old-fashioned, and liked to make his point that he was Doctor Who (he had question marks all over his shirt!!). After him came a TV movie where a new Doctor was introduced, Paul McGann.
McGann had previously worked with Richard E Grant (who would later play the Doctor in a made-for-internet cartoon series) in Withnail & I. Paul McGann was again a pleasant Doctor, friendly and happy. In the movie, he faced an old rival, the Master (who was another alien; only a baddie) who was played surprisingly by American actor Eric Roberts. After a good few years later, in the noughties, a new Doctor appeared. Christopher Eccolsten, who had also worked with Nicole Kidman in ghost movie The Others, was a north-accented, rather young Doctor who played the Doctor for only 13 episodes. After that, David Tennant arrived and played the Doctor for a good 5 years. Now, we are all waiting for the next Doctor...
Danny Spark's series, however, is entirely fan-based and partly inspired by other Doctor Who redos, such as Billy Treacy's popular Doctor Poo, though it still has the same plot, and the Daleks are to return as the Cyberman will as well. The Master is also announced to return.
