IIRC, the US government subsidizes corn production to the point of overproduction, making corn products have low prices compared to many others. This means that high fructose corn syrup is very cheap, which means Americans get fat.

@pinegrove33 - I would say that a large amount of vegans in Western countries are upper-middle class, but I'm assuming that some poor people in India are vegans.
