I think the Alligator Sky refers to the cracked soil on the surface of the Earth, and the astronauts who cannot return to Earth, so, the solid earth seems like sky that cannot be touched.

But then they wouldn't be very far in outer space, they would essentially still be in the Earth's atmosphere...

Darn! The "blueness" of Mashiro's hair is being totally exaggerated here! The manga cover arts show it with a bluish SHEEN to it, and even the anime isn't that offending, it doesn't make his hair ... bright cerulean! Blue is part of his color-scheme but he isn't bright blue at all!
