Romanian language is the closest to Classical Latin grammatically and because of its syntax. Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese lost crucial elements that set them apart from Latin compared to Romanian.
The western romance languages developed in parallel of eachother while romanian though minorly influenced by slavic, developed straight from the Latin that it was left with, preserving key Latin elements such as the neuter nouns and some lexicography only found in Romanian. Therefore, Romanian has to be the most conservative major romance language in existance.
Every romance language is a story of Latin evolution and preservance. Thus each romance language contains unique Latin characteristics that identify it with the father tongue, whether its a word or the pronounciation of words. However, Romanian took this one step further by preserving Latin in its syntax something that other romance languages failed to do.
