About Dessler Illusions
Erik Dessler, professional(and, more than slightly, unusual) street magician, based on the East Coast(USA)... for now.
Just beyond the shadows' reach; a ghost of movement felt more than seen, a presence sensed before the eye has caught up with the slight of hand that baffles the mind. The moment, that singular moment, when the hand and the eye conspire to inform the wondering brain: the impossible has just taken place. Your world has changed forever.
Magic has occurred.
No foolish stunts, no relying on more than the hand can do and the mind can conceive. Surrender to your darkest dreams, indeed; but this time, your eyes are wide open. And he's there: the Phantom.
The Phantom Illusionist - combining the thrill of dark "rock opera" and the mystery behind the mask with the sweeping intention of the classic magic legend; old tricks performed with a sharper twist. Young and old alike, tailored to whatever audience is there, the show must go on. Whatever you can dream, the Phantom can make you believe.
Welcome to Dessler's Dark Carnival. Step inside, for a moment, won't you? Come inside. Come inside and see...

Erik's own personal statement as a magician; do what has never been done, show what has never been seen, confront the eye with the illusion of the mind. In short: amaze and delight you, astound and excite you. There is something here for everyone. And the reason why I do what I do the way that I do, at least a part of it, is this:"TV illusions": i.e., "magic" that is only done because a $10,000 camera crew can shift their focus out of range while the "disappearing bus" just drives away off-screen - or similar "stunts" - are not magic. Any illusion that is simply and almost entirely created and finalized in an editing room behind some production studio's scenes... well, it's like building a home on an opera stage. The view may be beautiful, you may be able to rise in the morning and look out over the Alps, and it may be mesmerizing for a moment; but one careless stagehand's misstep will forever destroy the illusion. And then - like so many of you, so many whom I've heard say it, what you get is a generation of people can who no longer believe the reality of the set; who no longer believe in magic at all. Fraud and trickery, they call it; boring, at the best. And that... is not acceptable. Shouldn't we still be able to amaze them?
Magic, in the time of the great Houdini - every magician's inspiration, no matter to how great or small an extent - was an astounding phenomenon; and why? Because people believed. They weren't paid to stand holding hands and gasp audibly, or paid to simply stand by and pretend that they don't see the cameras and the wires and the cues. Inside the mind there is a deeper mystery than in the shallowest of stage settings. Why disillusion people further from the art of magic?
Why not... simply take it back? Take them back?
With the mystery, and the wonder of classic magic driving behind - something to bring to the audience, at least: to bring them into my world(or to show them the secret wonder of their own); to make them a real, live, surprising(and surprised!), COMPLETELY unscripted part of the experience. I don't want an audience to know what's coming next. Would you?
So... here; I try to bring that intensity, that darkness and the deepest illusions "up from the vaults and back to the streets"; no camera tricks, no million-dollar hourly-wage technical crew - just myself, my props, and the street audience watching. All of us experiencing every moment that happens exactly as it happens. Whether I am locked in a... pardon me, locked in a cage for an escape performance or the dangerous illusions that carry a very real risk, or my disappearing coins are turning into handkerchiefs and "jumping" from my hand to the hand of a grinning small child... and, wouldn't you know, the mask never frightens children. Think about that one for a moment; if you please. Children are the most wonderful audience, in the greatest and most literal sense, because they haven't forgotten how to wonder.
The audience, by watching my act, is giving me a great privilege: the chance to make them believe in the seemingly impossible. Offering me the gift of their attention and time. Setting aside whatever... misgivings... they may have in the hopes of being amazed. And as such, they deserve the greatest impact of magical mystery that I have at my disposal to give back to them. That's what I always try to do; if only to give them that one single moment of "magic". Do they wonder what is behind the mask?
Now, I want to make something very clear, here, before I sign off and vanish into the metaphorical shadows once again: I am NOT by ANY means saying that "TV magicians" are "fakes", "frauds", or anything of the sort. For... well, for one thing, that would be a huge betrayal of what I like to think of as an international network of magicians; we're all in it together, to a great extent. Secondly, it takes a lot of work, practice, choreography, and an incredibly creative and inventive mind to pull off many of the television illusions. These performers are talented, and put a lot of passion into what they do. What is lost, to me, is lost not in the magicians' intentions, then; but somewhere in the connection. Somewhere in between the illusion and the audience, something has dulled and faded. Even if it is only a little.
So please, do not misinterpret my meaning. My own style is just... well, it is exactly that; my own style. Television, to me, is a sterile medium for new magic. When you can't see the curtain swaying just as the shadow passes through it, you can't honestly touch the magic. And more people need to learn to look... beyond first appearances... to the deeper meaning beyond. My views are mine; and mine alone. My beliefs don't in any way DIScount anyone ELSE's. I'd never want them to. I just want to emerge from the shadows in the wings when you least expect it, and leave them whispering: "That's him - the Phantom!"
Fabulous. Just. Simply. Fabulous. Well done!
