A Fashion Designer for over 15 years, Ami Melecio has been able to combine her Latin roots with her love of style and the enviromental concerns we all face today. She is the Only Natural Designer in Chicago, and uses the highest quality of eco-friendly textiles such as Hemp, Linen, Organic Cotton, Silk and chemical free paints/dyes. The pestcides used on 'conventional' cotton increasin gly threatens people, wild life and the enviroment , these changes affect each one of us.Organic Cotton represents a return to safe and sustainable practices, grown with natural fertilizers and free from toxic chemicals. Linen is a fiber derived from the stem of the flax plant. Hemp is easily grown in good soil and temperature climates, without the use of pesticides or herbicides. It is also resistant to both mold and ultraviolet light. There are concerns about chemicals in products, the safety of our ground water, and cutting down old growth forests. Purchasing a product made of these fabrics, addresses all of these issues. Ami was able to showcase her creations with a Fashion Show on www.ABC7chicago.com news segment " Style Watch" on June 7,2007 with host Janet Davies. She was also choosen for the premire issue of Chicago Latina Underground magazine, for which her designs will be on the cover of their fall issue. Chicago's very own online DJ Nicci C (www.myspace.com/Nicatnite), interviewed Ami on her latin/ Italian influences in fashion. My Hispanic Network (www.gomhn.com) showcased her designs in their " Style from the Windy City" segment . Also on the show "The N Beat" with Theresa Guiterrez on ABC7, which focused on the growing success of Chicago Latinas in Business, Art and Fashion. Ami was proud to show several of her pieces from her clothing line Designs By Ami. Her collections range from Original Hand Painted Handbags to Casual Hemp and Evening Wear.
