Def Deala, real name Derrick Malik Farnsworth, wasn't born and raised in the streets like most rappers. His father, Samuel Farnsworth was sterile, so his mother Shanikwa Zimba Freeman got artificially inseminated with sperm from an anonymous donor. Def was born in Midway City, CA on August 20, 1984. Tragically, Def Deala was deaf and mute.
Unlike most rappers, Def Deala had an idyllic childhood. He had many friends in Midway City's large deaf community. Early on, Def Deala's mother instilled a love of rap in him by signing out the lyrics of influential West Coast rappers such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. At the age of 14, Def Deala received an operation to partially restore his hearing and speaking capabilities. With his hearing and speech restored, Def Deala was free to explore his talents in rap.
Having never heard human speech before, Def Deala's initial forays into the genre of rap were disastrous. He was initially booed off stage by hecklers who couldn't understand his heavily slurred speech. Suffering from depression, Def Deala began using recreational drugs. Tragically, his beloved mother was killed in a gang shooting in 2000. Def began his downward spiral into a life of crime. At the age of 16, Def Deala was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and assault and battery.
While in jail, Def Deala met future rap star Chicken Digger. Chicken Digger taught him how to use his speech impediment to his advantage. Eventually, Def Deala perfected a rap style he calls the"Big D Deaf" style. This style was popularized in his hit single "WHAT U SAY (HOE)". The Big D Deaf style is characterized by heavily slurred speech interspersed with sign language.
Today, Def Deala is part of Chicken Digger's multi-platinum rap group. To date he has released three albums, "BITCH SPEAK UP", "NIGGAS Y'ALL HEAR ME?", and "TONE DEF". Part of the royalties from his albums go to his charity organization S.I.G.N. (Support for Independent Generic Niggas), which helps young deaf rappers start their careers.
