And while we're on the subject of Christmas... pilgrims and tourists are visiting historic sites in Israel during the holiday season. Jerusalem and Bethlehem are the most popular, but the Dead Sea and the Jordan River are also attracting visitors. Our Israeli bureau brings us there. Many visitors come to Israel during the Christmas season to retrace the footsteps of Jesus and the beginning of Christianity along the Dead Sea.
[Kribus Bar, Tour Guide, National Parks Authority]: "This place was first mentioned in the Bible in the story of the crossing of the Children of Israel on their way to the land of Canaan. After 40 years wandering in the desert, they reached the plain of Moab on the other side of the Jordan River and here the Jordan River opened up and they crossed the Jordan River without touching the water."
"This place is mentioned in the New Testament as the place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River."
Was Qumran the first Christian monastery? Members of the Jewish religious group known as the Essenes are considered by many historians as the first monks in the Middle East. The famous Dead Sea Scrolls, which archaeologists say were written by the Essenes, were found in this cave by a Bedouin shepherd in the early 1960's.
On the way to the Dead Sea lies the largest Desert Oasis in Israel with an ecosystem tailored to the arid region. There are no fish in the Dead Sea but there are fish in the fresh water of the oasis even though it is not connected to any other fresh water resources. No one knows how the fish got here. Could this be another Christmas miracle? Christmas is also an occasion to promote peace.
[Rafael Ben Hur, Deputy Director, Tourism Ministry]: "We believe that tourism prevent terrorism...We hope that in May 2009 we are going to have a very important guest, Pope Benedict the 16th...As a matter of fact, all these places are very good sites for peace."
As hearts are opened at these historic sites during this Christmas and New Year, let us hope for peace on Earth.

Brought the boys on their 1st Swimming trip in the Dead Sea area. Of course, they are too young to go into the Dead Sea, but they are nevertheless still contented playing around in the Babies' Pool. They do not fear water at all!
