About Me:

On this channel you'll find videos and audio tracks by Jackie DeShannon - the best artist ever in my opinion - and lots of different artists covering her wonderful songs. More songs and videos will be added! I'll also review all her 16 albums from the 60's and the 70's.

I happen to be someone who adores Jackie DeShannon. Why? Cause she's the best female songwriter ever! She doesn't sing that bad either.

Jackie DeShannon was one of the first female artist to write and record her own songs on a regular basis, starting in the late 50's.
In 1960 Jackie met Eddie Cochran's former fiancée, Sharon Sheeley, and they'd form a fantastic songwriting team, which lasted until 1963.
They'd write more than 50 songs during those three years that Jackie or other artists would record (and most of them are really good). There were also some 20-25 demos recorded (yes, and quite some of those are also really good). During the early 60's she also toured with Ry Cooder - and how cool isn't that!
Jackie recorded the original (and best) version of "Needles and Pins" in early 1963. Lately it has been revealed that she in fact did contribute to the song. Later the same year, she wrote and recorded "When You Walk in the Room". Both these songs became big hits the next year when The Searchers released them.
Jackie DeShannon wrote songs as early as 1964 together with a then unknown studio musician named Jimmy Page. In the same year she also wrote songs with another future star, Randy Newman, and toured with The Beatles. Years later the collaborated with Van Morrison and Michael McDonald (of The Doobie Brothers).
In 1965 Burt Bacharach asked Jackie to record "What the World Needs Now Is Love", which become her first big hit. Bacharach would write more songs for her the same year and the next year.
Jackie DeShannon's albums may not be the best, but her record company didn't want her songs on them; they wanted her songs to be recorded by other artists. And other artists sure did during the 60's: Herb Alpert, The Byrds, Glen Campbell, Cher, Dave Clark Five, Duane Eddy, The Everly Brothers, Marianne Faithfull, Lesley Gore, Dobie Gray, Brenda Lee, Rick Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, Peter & Gordon, P.J. Proby, Johnny Rivers, The Ronettes, The Searchers, Bobby Vee - just to mention some of them.
In the first half of the 60's she recorded about 90 demo songs for Liberty's publishing company, Metric Music, using musicians such as Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, David Gates. Those demos are fabulous and many, many artists have recorded them. I'll present some of the best ones on this channel.
In 1968 Jackie released the album "Laurel Canyon", which could be considered to be one of the first singer songwriter albums by a female artist.
The next year the recorded the classic "Put a Little Love in Your Heart".
In 1975 she recorded a song called "Bette Davis Eyes". Six years later Kim Carnes' version would top the US single chart for nine consecutive weeks. Two years later Tracie Ullman scored with Jackie's great song "Breakaway".
Jackie DeShannon continued to release albums on a regular basis until 1978.
Twentytwo years later she made a comeback with the album "You Know Me".
Jackie DeShannon has always kept a low profile but she's very respected in the music business. No wonder Paul Shaffer - the bandleader from the David Letterman Show - called her "The Greta Garbo of Rock 'n' Roll".

So forget about other female artists and songwriters, cause Jackie is the thing!
