How to measure defense in today's NBA.
Today's NBA make the mistake of only looking at total point per games of your opponent as the way to measure defense. Does it matter? Somewhat because it does show how much points the team surrenders. What does it forget?
Total FG attempts by the opponent, Opp. FG%, and total attempt by the other team.
Case in point (Updated April 5, 2009):
Los Angeles Lakers team stats:
Offense: 106.9 ppg, 85.1 FGA, 47.4 FG%
Defense: 99.4ppg, 83.4 FGA, 44.9 FG%
Lakers are 3rd in total offense but are 13th in the league in point per game.
True but *MORE* Possessions on offense plays a *KEY* factor!
Further more the Lakers are the top stealing team in the league which leads to more fastbreak points and more possessions overall.
The best statistic in measuring defense? FG%.
Lowering opponent FG% (holds true in personal defense)=GREAT DEFENSE!
In terms of FG% defense, that is GREAT considering how high powered the Lakers offense is! The are 6th in the league in lowering opponents FG%.
Consider the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics:
Celtics offense/defense FGA: 77.0 /78.2
Cavaliers offense/defense FGA: 78.6 /78.7
Both teams offense aren't as high powered offensively as the Lakers are. Both teams aren't as steal happy as the Lakers are. Less possessions overall: Less points scored!
Note: Both Cleveland and Boston's defense are number 2 and 1 respectively when it comes to FG%, hence why their defenses look good (and are good).
Boston's defense is still better. Why? Consider those factors again.
You can still give up many points and still be a good defense team! Defense is best measured in FG%, not total points given up.
Again: DO NOT LOOK AT TOTAL POINTS GIVEN UP!
Factor in total possessions, steals by your teams, and FG% BEFORE looking at total points given up.
Same thing about 3pt. Defense. Sure Cleveland has the better FG% defense against the Lakers in 3pt shots but check this: Lakers has an average of 2.7 more 3pt. ATTEMPTS against them than the Cavaliers (Cavs: 18.0, Lakers 20.7). Yet teams only has 1.2 more 3 pointers against the Lakers than they do against the Cavaliers (Cavs: 6.0, Lakers: 7.2).
FACTOR IN TOTAL ATTEMPTS.
I think you can get the message by now.

There might be questions about the Hobbitmage things in my videos and I'll say this for the record:
I have nothing against Hobbitmage and he's a really great guy. I just wished he would stop 1) Overrating young players and comparing them to better players (The Josh Powell comparison to Horace Grant) 2) And stop being a classless jerk. Otherwise he's a very good person and I enjoy debating with him.
Interests
Kobe Bryant: Leader of the LA Lakers. The closest thing to Michael (that doesn't mean he is like Mike) that we have in today's game.
Lebron: The Scottie Pippen/Magic Johnson of today. Finisher like Pippen (please Michael was a guard Lebron is a forward), and is a great playmaker like Magic though isn't as good as Magic was.
Kobe emulated Michael's game and was inspired by Michael. He learned from Michael and added his own arsenal of skills from Michael with more emphasis on perimeter shooting and more range to make up his own weaknesses to the game. Phil Jackson himself stated:
Kobe: Better shooter.
Michael: Better post up and inside game.
Both had the same competitive fire (both Bull and Laker coaches that coached them both) and Phil Jackson said of their mentality:
"You could set the bar 7 feet (high) and tell them that no one could jump that high and both of them would say they could and would try to jump over it regardless if they could or not".
Kobe isn't as good as Michael because while he has the skills of Mike and the killer instinct that Michael possessed he does not have the athleticism that Michael had. Wasn't as fast, strong, and most importantly (according to Jackson) the million dollar hands Michael had. Kobe has small but good hands but Michael's hands were probably the best ever.
Important thing though: Remember Kobe Bryant as Kobe Bryant. Not Michael's heir but let him be himself. He may have emulated Michael's game but he is Kobe Bryant #24 of the LA Lakers.
