I was elected to the 110th Congress in 2006, to my first term as the representative of the First Congressional District in Tennessee. I am a strong advocate for the people of East Tennessee.

I am a member of the Small Business Committee, Education and Labor Committee, Homeland Security Committee and the Republican House Policy Committee.

With 8 years of experience from 1998-2006 in the Tennessee State Legislature, I was known as the "Father of Open Government" in Tennessee. I have sponsored legislation to raise accountability standards of government. I served on the Tennessee State House Transportation Committee, House Government Operations Committee, House Public Safety and Rural Roads Subcommittee, and was Chairman of Commerce, Labor, and Transportation Sub Committee. I am a critic of unnecessary growth of government and was a leader against the state income tax in Tennessee.

I was raised in Limestone Cove, Tennessee, where I worked my way through college to become a Respiratory Therapist. I received my Respiratory Therapy Certification from East Tennessee State University in 1979 and an A.A.S. in Respiratory Therapy from California College in 1983. Later, received a B.S. in Organizational Management from Milligan College in 1991.
