Stories tell of a small village named Metaphor, but no one knows why it is called that; it just is. The people of Metaphor lived in fear, for they lived close to the borders of Razaeth. Razaeth was the land of the Anraje, a ferocious lizard folk with a great passion for war. All over the world there were tales of their Bloodragers who fought in blind rage with great swords, of the Hexxers who manipulated the spirits of the dead to curse and damage their enemies and of the Shadowhunters, who stayed hidden in the treetops as they rained down arrows on their foes. The people of Metaphor prayed to the heavens for something to protect them were the Anraje to attack their humble village.

One rainy day, a small row boat hit the shores near Metaphor, and in the boat, tightly wrapped in warm blankets, was a Anraje infant. An old fisherman found the boat, and though he reviled the Anraje like the other villagers did, he could not bring himself to kill a harmless baby, so he took the child for himself and decided to raise it. He named this Anraje Thorne Rainfall, because Thorne was the name of his stillborn son, and Rainfall because it rained on that particular day, something that did not commonly happen in Metaphor.

As he grew up, Thorne because rather liked by the villagers as he was punctual and mannered, but also kind and intelligent. The old man who took care of him died when he was in his younger teens, so he took care of their house alone on top of helping out in the village.

However, one day, a farmer came running into the village, and told the inhabitants of Metaphor he had seen a large Anraje army, led by the feared War Lord Hethez Spiritspeaker. The villagers immediately evacuated the town, not taking anything with them. Suddenly, as the villagers had come quite a distance from Metaphor, thunder struck in the village, the winds gathered and the rain poured heavily. One villager returned to the town, and came back reporting that the Anraje army had seemingly retreated without touching the town. The villagers rejoiced, but their cries of relief and happiness was slowly changed to confused mumbling. Because while the Anraje army was nowhere to be seen, neither was Thorne Rainfall.

Years passed, but no one ever heard of the friendly Anraje again. But some people claimed he was still with them, for since the day the Anraje army approached and a sudden storm appeared in the middle of the town, Metaphor was always showered by a gentle summer rain.
