@mmarconcini how about we just say the shot hit the joint between the neck and the torso, which the joint also we near a fuselage that cause the whole thing to blow up ... but then that would make it a terrible design flaw rather then a movie mistake.

i do love it in the anime that the Japanese guy died from that incident, buried, and then reanimated by aliens modified with 4 more arms and through all that no body had the common courtesy to remove the bucket from his foot and billboard around his neck!
