"The whole Red Scare thing they used between the 50s and 90s was used not only to keep the powers firmly in place, the idea that keeping the population afraid of evil communists also worked so well that not only a lot of people still believe that anybody who's not a capitalist is automatically a murderous Stalinist and I'd say it also provided them with a certain sense of solidarity - us and them, basically.
