Seriously, though, he's a sick man whose words reveal much more about his own inner conflicts than about gay people. I imagine if you searched his hard drive you'd find plenty that elucidates the ugliness of his words.
In much the same way people do today I imagine: some would have loved it, some would have thought it long and yawned, and those responsible for underwriting it would have been worried about production costs.
