My Personal Ten Commandments of Death Metal Bass Playing

1.) Never use a pick

2.) Treat the bass more like a rhythm instrument instead of a string instrument (liberal use of slap, tap and pop techniques)

3.) Both the smiley and frowny face equalizer settings are bad most of the time

4.) A boost in the 400 - 800 Hz range on an other wise flat equalizer is the way to go

5.) Avoid playing follow the leader with the rhythm guitarist as much as possible

6.) Play off the rhythms of the drummer (especially the snare and bass drum rhythms)

7.) Demand sonic space in both the song structure and equalizer settings

8.) Down tuning (for bass) is always bad

9.) Don't get locked into your title as bass player, never be afraid to take it up an octave to get more sonic space

10.) Add the total wattage of the guitarist(s) amps x 2 + 200 watts = your minimal wattage to be heard (example Guitarist A's 75 watt amp + Guitarist B's 80 watt amp = 155 total guitar watts. 155 x 2 + 200 = 510 watts minimal for a bass player to be heard)
