I have studied and researched the life of George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn for the past 24 years. I have filmed several documentaries on the battle and go to the battlefield every year. To date I have been to the battlefield 45 times (separate days). I am a Custer supporter, as well as a supporter of the Indians that fought him. Some may consider that a contradiction, but I do not. All that fought and died there on June 25-26, 1876 deserve our respect. All should be remembered and none should be forgotten.

I neglected to thank you in my last comment for this excellent series. I have never been to the battle field but it is on my bucket list. I have studied this incident for close to sixty years and you can imagine the changes Custers' reputation has undergone in that time period from admiration to vilification depending on the political whims at different times. Many should realize that had this battle not occurred Custer would have been regarded as one of the better combative generals this nation has produced from just his Civil War service alone. In the future I will be sending a series of questions that may help me fill in some of the blind spots in my research. Your videos of the battle field have been a great help to me and to future students of this battle. Keep up the good work.

emil590648,
I agree with almost everything you said. The only place I disagree slightly is with Custer's intentions. I do believe that after the Ford D trek Custer did realize that he needed more men to capture the non-combatants. Therefore his movements on the battlefield were not so much a diversion, as they were an attempt to hold the area until the recalled units arrived. Once Benteen, and maybe even the pack train arrived, Custer would then have enough men to capture the women and children.

The more I study this battle the more I am convinced that Custer's movements after he realized that he could not capture the non-combatants was to create enough of a diversion to allow for Reno and Benteen to attack the hostiles from the rear and at least destroy the fighting arm of the village. The fact that Boston C was able to join him from the pack train would have shown him that his other forces were capable of doing the same. His couriers and messages were all intended to bring up the majority of his forces. He had surprised the village and many of the Indian accounts have indicated this fact. A direct order was given to Benteen in the written message and was disobeyed. Reno and Benteen's excuse for not supporting Custer was that they had wounded that needed attending. The pack train could easily have assisted the wounded and still brought enough ammo to the new attack. By attending to about thirty wounded R and B directly caused the death of over two hundred men.
