HIP HOP (Golden Age NYC)
In the late eighties, rap went through a transformation, musically and thematically, away from what was "old school" (Grand Master Flash) and into the "new school," Eric B and Rakim, Ultramagnetic MC's, Public Enemy, De La Soul... Today there isn't a continent on the planet that isn't familiar with hip hop, but in 1987-1989, the world had never heard it before. And while it grew out of New York City, it was still in an early stage. Radio DJ's Chuck Chillout, DJ Red Alert, and Mr. Magic held three shows a week that premiered all this incredible music whose arrival was a musical revolution. This was a time when there was only 12 hours of hip hop in New York City a week. This was before MTV launched their bandwagon "Yo! MTV Raps" show to cover this revolution. Anyone who listened to these radio shows knew that MTV had played themselves for simply calling it Rap and not Hip Hop. As well, MTV could not, and would never be so close to the source, the streets in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queensbridge where neighborhood producers produced neighborhood rappers and pressed neighborhood records... which, if they were good enough, would make their way into the New York City airwaves spinning on these three DJ's "wheels of steel." It was a moment anyone who experienced, won't forget. And the music, like all great music, hasn't lost any of it's ability to turn a party out, or open up your mind.
