In 1963 the United States Supreme Court rules that reciting the Lord's Prayer in classrooms is unconstitutional. In Canada, reaction to the U.S. ruling is mixed. Many Manitobans are shocked but feel "it can't happen here." In Ontario, many feel that the ruling is a move against religious discrimination.
In Alberta there is sharp criticism to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision, feeling it was an extreme act of separation of church and state. In British Columbia, there is disappointment because the ruling means freedom of choice is denied. Interestingly, initial surveys find no strong reaction expressed in Quebec, the Maritimes and Newfoundland.
