In the same sense that anarchy is a type of government, or perhaps more appropriately in the same sense that NOT smoking is a habit.
Myth 2. "Creationism is a legitimate branch of science"
A witch doctor is not a doctor just because he wants to call himself one and a creationist is not a scientist by the same logic. If someone does not use the scientific method of inquiry then by definition they are not preforming nor even using science. Problem is that we live in a world of voodoo.
Myth 3. "Atheists don't have any beliefs"
By the same right that because a theist does not derive their beliefs from the god of another, which they do not believe in, that THEY have no beliefs. Key difference though, we base ours on logic and reasoning for the sake of truth, instead of faith for the sake of magical reward.
Myth 4. "Bananas are proof of a god"
Theist: I couldn't have evolved from a monkey, I HAD to have been created by a god. I can prove it too. I mean, just look at these bananas, they're just SO perfect... they're yellow and pretty and tasty and ahhhhh!!! *chomp* *chomp* *chomp*
Atheist: ...ok then...good luck with that...
Myth 5. "The theory of evolution states that humans came from monkeys"
No it does not, it states that humans share a common ancestor with other primates and more specifically are a member of the great ape family. Creationists on the other hand may very well be the product of a human/monkey relationship, based on their ability to reason logically.
Myth 6. "America is a christian nation"
True by the same logic in which it is a white nation. And that notion just worked out so well. Majority does not equal entirety, nor does it justify absolute majority rule.
Myth 7. "You can scare atheists by warning them of hell"
You can also try to scare us by warning us about Santa's naughty list. Problem is that we do not believe in either and therefore do not fear either.
Myth 8. "Atheists just trade in the bible for The Origin of Species"
Not even close. Darwin was a smart guy and he was right about evolution, but we don't think that makes him better than us, nor does it make his book sacred. Burn it for all we care. Its just a book, and by attacking something that represents an accumulation of knowledge and ideas you are only proving how afraid of them you really are.
Myth 9. "Atheists just want to sin because we love the devil instead of Jesus"
Always love this one. Sin is a relative term applicable only to religion, as such it has no meaning to us; like saying we cheated at a game we are not even playing. And the devil can make out with his buddy Mohammad while Jesus fucks a fairy. We don't believe in any of them so we don't care either way.
Myth 10. "Atheists are always angry and rude"
The basic fundamentals of religion tell theists to pity us, criticize us, fear us, and attempt to convert us to their ridiculous fantasy, and that's when they're being nice. They usually offer condescending prayer, insults, and threats to their arsenal as well. So ask a black man who lives in a world dominated by Nazis and the kkk what his opinion of white supremacy is, and the answer will be similar to what an atheist says about living in a world of religion. Nervous, defensive, and pissed off would be about right.
Myth 11. "Atheists can't prove that God doesn't exist therefore their ideas are not to be trusted"
(Ahem) You can't prove that the Greek gods aren't false, therefore your religion isn't to be trusted. Wrong. The burden of proof is on those who make the proposition which is to be accepted as truth, regardless of whomever makes the claim. Atheists happen to believe in science more then any other school of thought because it can prove its assertions with logic and evidence. Religion can't, otherwise it wouldn't need faith. It's that simple.
Myth 12. "Evolution is merely a theory and should be treated as such"
Incorrect. The theory of evolution is a scientific theory, one accepted by the ENTIRE scientific community. It is in fact regarded as the unifying biology, as it connects everything from dermatology to neuroscience. Its kinda a big deal. Question is, of one's position of what the truth is contradicts observable reality, why would they still believe in it? Arrogance? Stubbornness? Idiocy? Outright Hubris? Take your pick, I personally go with "all of the above".

I love science, I think that scientists are the wizards of the modern era. Old, wise, and just so damned knowledgeable. I love history as well, and it is the history of religion that lead me to becoming an atheist. Basicly, onece you've seen through one scam then you've seen through them all.
Books:
I like history books, ones with verifiable sources. So no, books that refrence magic as a factual happening *cough* Bible *cough* are not accurate history books but fantasy books, deserving no more respect than than Harry Potter.
