I imagine there was a problem with the GE, its the only reason I can think of for putting the geep in the lead. Likely a cab issue, not affecting the units pulling ability.

the wreck was caused by a washout, the road bed was washed away by heavy rains, not sure but a burst beaver dam may have been involved. . The crew is lucky to have survived with only minor injuries, as you can see, the locomotives are severely damaged.
