Proof - Who Shoulders The Burden? Clutchology - 617 views - 2 weeks ago
I am now on LiveJournal:
http://nanonarcissus.livejourn al.com

I treat the burden of proof as a philosophical equivalent of a science experiment. It is a way of testing your beliefs. I embrace it, and hate to see so many people using it as a weapon.

The burden of proof is, in short:
1) The arguments you use to justify your position.
2) How that justifies your belief.

It is only reasonable to have a burden equal to the reasons why you believe. As I think most atheists are atheists because of lack of theistic justification and not positive arguments against gods existence, our burden is to show theism as unconvincing.

Our next burden is to then show why atheism is tenable from this 'neutral' state. You cannot simply show theism as unconvincing and claim atheism is. That is what confuses most theists.

Theists, who make a positive claim, have to present arguments in favour of gods existence and a separate argument explaining how those arguments justify belief. The greater the validity and number of these arguments, the less they have to rationalise how those arguments justify belief.
A theist who presents no arguments, relies on faith and asserts it is rational will have a tough burden on their hands.

The only way to avoid a burden of proof is to admit your beliefs are not based on rationality. Then you can go free without justification, but don't expect intellectual respect for the belief either. It goes both ways.

My attempt to break down Pascal's Wager, as has been done innumerably before me.

The credit for this week's background music goes to Evanescence, with one of my favourites, 'Lies'.

How are we supposed to improve our lives if we don't know the truths from which to derive?

I'm not trying to 'de-convert' anyone to atheism. I'm not trying to convince you that 'there is no god'. I'm simply here for my own purposes, to test my own ideas, and to come to my own conclusions. Anyone who wishes to take the journey with me is simply a bonus.

I don't think any of us can truly grasp the bare reality of things. As to the question of god, we probably will never know (at least, in this lifetime) whether we are right or not. All I ask is that I can demonstrate that my ideas are justified, and that you give me the opportunity to do so.
About Me: "I believe the bible's true. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say I KNOW it's true. And because I know it's true, I'm not really interested in anyone who says it's not true"

Nice channel, nice videos and nice in general.

Invite sent.

Just a heads up perhaps if you may want to get involved with this project. Copy and paste - Thou shalt Always Sing - into the YouTube searchbar. It's on rockerwere's profile and hopefully with a bit of spreading it can become even better than it should be at the minute.

thanks for sharing some of the ideas u have on moral obligations without religion :) my dad always gets me with round-about questions that assume non-religious people have no moral base and i often have too much difficulty refuting them ha.. ah and about one of your videos on the meaning of life, i hafta agree, to me it seems irrelevant - just seems like a petty search to find ANYTHING that will finally give the human race importance, a man-made concept that makes the universe just a bit more human-centered (which, to me, is tooo ridiculous) thanks :) keep it up and maybe tell me if u find something that imbues the 'meaning of life' with some relevance ! :)

My god, you're only 18! I wish that I was as clued up / confident as you are when I was 18. Writing is one of the best outlets for an INTJ...along with film making. You're nailing both.
